Lesson 2- September 17/09/09

Habermas and the public Sphere

Second lesson back and straight into the theory.

Todays lesson looked at Habermas' theory into the public sphere and how his theory relates to web 2.0 and our online news topic.
His theory centered around the idea that
"the citizens act as a public when they deal with matters of general interest without being subject to coercion; thus with the guarantee that they may assemble and freely unite, express and publicize their opinions freely."

In more basic terms 'man' must be given the opportunity to meet freely and discuss issues and topics of the day as equals. Habermas' wrote his theory in 1962 when web 2.0 was very much a thing of the future, however, today web 2.0 is a major supporting structure that supports Habermas' theory into the 21st century.
The ability to watch, discuss and comment on relevant topics through the use of forums and chat rooms allows the public of the day to meet, albeit through cyber space and discuss as equals their own opinions and debate news and issues that can be watched online.
